How the onboard power system works in a motorhome

From generated power to electrical appliances – all components work together

The onboard electrical system in the motorhome ensures that electrical energy is reliably generated, stored, distributed and used. Each component takes on a clearly defined task – from power generation to charging the battery, supplying electrical devices and central control of the entire system.

A solar system generates electrical power during the day and, via a solar charge controller, charges the leisure battery. The charge controller manages the energy provided by the solar module and adapts the charging process to the battery type. It protects the battery from overcharging. Further protection functions, such as against deep discharge, short circuit or reverse polarity, depend on the model.

The leisure battery stores the harvested energy and makes it available as required for lighting, water pump, fridge and other 12-volt appliances.

Anyone who wants to use 230-volt appliances independently of the mains will need an inverter. It converts the battery voltage into standard AC current. Digital control and monitoring systems also monitor energy flow, battery status and other vehicle functions, allowing convenient operation directly inside the vehicle or – depending on the system – via an app.

Together, these components form a coordinated onboard power system that ensures reliable energy supply and high comfort in the motorhome.

    ONDA

Connected onboard power electronics for more control and comfort

ONDA comprises two solutions for different requirements. The ONDA Smart System connects selected energy management components via Bluetooth and provides battery, consumption and solar data in an app. ONDA Connectivity integrates compatible onboard devices and functions into a central system. Depending on the system, Bluetooth, WLAN, as well as cloud or SIM connections are available for remote access.

Safe and Efficient: What to Consider in Onboard Power Electronics

Perfectly matched components ensure reliable power supply

High-performance onboard power electronics consist of more than just individual components. The key is that solar system, charge controller, battery, charger, inverter, and other systems are all optimally matched. Only this way can generated energy be used efficiently, the battery reliably charged, and safe power supply in the motorhome ensured.

Proper installation is just as important. Suitable cable cross-sections, correct fusing, and coordinated components all contribute to a reliable and safe onboard system. With lithium batteries in particular, it is important to ensure that chargers and solar charge controllers support the correct charging profile. This way, all components work efficiently together and ensure long service life for the entire system.

Frequently Asked Questions about Onboard Power Electronics

The onboard power electronics include all components responsible for the generation, storage, distribution and use of electrical energy in a motorhome. This includes, among others, solar modules, solar charge controllers, batteries, chargers, DC-DC converters, inverters, control and display systems as well as switches, sockets and other installation accessories.

A solar charge controller connects the solar module to the onboard battery and controls the charging process. It protects the battery from overcharging and ensures that the generated solar energy is used efficiently. MPPT charge controllers can further optimise the energy yield of the solar system.

An inverter is required if you want to operate 230-volt appliances independently from the mains. It converts the 12-volt DC of the onboard battery into standard 230-volt AC, enabling you to use many electric appliances in your motorhome.

The choice of the right battery depends on your power requirements and intended use. AGM batteries offer reliable energy supply for many applications, while lithium batteries stand out due to their low weight, high cycle life and fast charging capability. It is important that all components of the onboard system are matched to the respective battery type.

Many components such as solar modules, chargers, inverters or selected ONDA solutions can be retrofitted. Whether retrofitting is possible depends on existing system voltage, battery type, available installation space, wiring and existing interfaces. Installation should be carried out by a qualified specialist workshop.

ONDA expands selected components of the onboard power electronics with digital functions. Depending on the system, for example, battery status, solar charging or energy consumption can be conveniently monitored via app. In addition, compatible systems allow software updates and other comfort functions.

Solar modules, solar charge controllers, batteries, chargers, DC-DC converters and inverters must all be technically matched. Crucial factors include voltage, power, maximum current, battery technology, charging profile, cable cross-sections and fusing. For connected systems, the interfaces and communication protocols used must also be compatible.
