How the on-board power system works in a motorhome

From generated power to electrical consumers – all components work together

The on-board power system in a motorhome ensures that electrical energy is reliably generated, stored, distributed and used. Every component has a clearly defined task – from generating electricity and charging the battery to supplying power to electrical consumers and providing central control for the whole system.

A solar system produces electricity during the day, charging the habitation battery via a solar charge controller. The charge controller manages the energy supplied by the solar module and adapts the charging process to the specific battery type. It also protects the battery from overcharging. Further protection functions, such as against deep discharge, short circuits or polarity reversal, depend on the particular model.

The habitation battery stores the recovered energy and makes it available for lighting, water pump, fridge and other 12-volt appliances as needed.

If you also want to use 230V appliances independently of a hook-up, you need an inverter. This converts the battery voltage into household-standard alternating current. Digital control and monitoring systems also oversee energy flows, battery status and further vehicle functions, enabling comfortable operation directly in the vehicle or – depending on the system – by app.

Together, these components form a coordinated on-board system that ensures reliable energy supply and high levels of comfort in the motorhome.

Safe and efficient: what to consider with on-board electronics

Perfectly matched components ensure a reliable power supply

A high-performance on-board electrical system involves more than just individual components. The crucial factor is that the solar system, charge controller, battery, charger, inverter and other systems are optimally coordinated. Only then can the generated energy be used efficiently, the battery charged reliably and a safe power supply ensured in the motorhome.

Professional installation is just as important. Suitable cable cross-sections, correct fusing and matched components all contribute to the reliability and safety of the on-board system. Especially for lithium batteries, it is essential to make sure that chargers and solar charge controllers support the appropriate charging profile. This allows all components to work efficiently together and ensures a long service life for the entire system.

Frequently asked questions about on-board electronics

The on-board electrical system includes all components responsible for the generation, storage, distribution and use of electrical energy in the motorhome. This includes solar modules, solar charge controllers, batteries, chargers, DC-DC converters, inverters, control and display systems, as well as switches, sockets and additional installation accessories.

A solar charge controller connects the solar module to the on-board battery and manages the charging process. It protects the battery from overcharging and ensures efficient use of the generated solar power. MPPT charge controllers can further optimise the energy output from the solar system.

An inverter is needed when you want to run 230V appliances independently of external power. It converts the 12V DC from the on-board battery into standard 230V AC, allowing you to operate many electrical devices in the motorhome.

The choice of the right battery depends on your energy requirements and intended use. AGM batteries provide reliable power for many applications, while lithium batteries impress with light weight, high cycle stability and rapid charging capability. It’s important that all on-board components are matched to the chosen battery type.

Many components such as solar modules, chargers, inverters or selected ONDA solutions can be retrofitted. Whether retrofitting is possible depends on existing system voltage, battery type, available installation space, wiring and interfaces. Installation should be carried out by a qualified specialist workshop.

ONDA extends selected components of the on-board electronics with digital functions. Depending on the system, battery status, solar charging and energy consumption can be monitored conveniently via an app. Compatible systems also enable software updates and additional comfort features.

Solar modules, solar charge controllers, batteries, chargers, DC-DC converters and inverters must be technically coordinated. Voltage, power, maximum current, battery technology, charging profile, cable cross-sections and fusing are crucial. For networked systems, the used interfaces and communication protocols must also be compatible.
