Which rear carrier is right for you and your vehicle?

Matching the vehicle type, load, and payload correctly

The selection begins with the question of what you want to transport. For standard bicycles, a lighter system is often sufficient. E-bikes and scooters, due to their higher weight, require a carrier with a correspondingly high payload. In addition, the weight of the carrier, the actual load, the permissible rear axle load, and the vehicle's gross weight must be considered.

The body style of the vehicle also plays an important role. Motorhomes and panel vans have different requirements for installation, operation and rear access.

Frame-mounted rear carriers are securely attached to the motorhome and allow for a comparatively low loading height.

How to mount and load a rear carrier safely

A rear carrier must fit the vehicle, the chassis and the intended load. Therefore, the technical requirements and approvals from the vehicle and body manufacturer should be checked before choosing a carrier. The carrier’s maximum payload must not be equated with the actual permissible load on the vehicle.

When loading, the two-wheelers should be positioned evenly and secured using the rails, retaining arms and safety devices provided. Heavy batteries or removable attachments can generally be removed before travel, if the manufacturer’s specifications allow this.

For installation and retrofitting, we recommend consulting a specialist workshop or an AL-KO Customer Centre.

Frequently asked questions about rear carriers

The required load capacity depends on the number and weight of the bicycles, e-bikes or scooters. In addition, the carrier’s own weight, the rear axle load and the permissible gross weight of the vehicle must be taken into account.

As well as the rear carrier’s maximum payload, you must consider the system’s unladen weight, the weight of the two-wheelers you want to transport, the permissible rear axle load and the vehicle’s gross weight. The technically possible load capacity of the carrier therefore does not automatically equal the actual permissible load.

The decisive factors are the type of vehicle, the chassis, the rear design and your transport needs. Different versions are available for motorhomes than for panel vans, where easy access to the rear doors is vital.

Rear carriers for motorhomes are often mounted directly on the vehicle frame, providing a stable fit and a low loading height. For panel vans, easy access to the rear doors is especially important. Depending on the system, the carrier may be pivoted, folded down or moved away from the vehicle.

Many motorhomes and panel vans can be retrofitted with a suitable rear carrier system. The prerequisites are a compatible chassis, sufficient load reserves and professional installation.

Many rear carrier systems are suitable for transporting e-bikes. Key factors are the carrier’s maximum payload, the weight of the individual bicycles and the permissible load of the vehicle. Always check the technical data of each system before choosing.
